Here's a dilemma for you. You've been diagnosed with prostate cancer and have decided that you want Proton Beam Therapy to treat it. You have a real desire to go to Loma Linda, California to treat, because they have been doing it longer than any other center in the U.S. Dilemma? There is a three to four month wait and you need to get treated.
Sure, prostate cancer is usually a slow growing type of cancer, but, let's get real; it's still cancer growing in you.
So? What do you do? Do you wait them out or do you start contacting the other centers?
With the popularity of PBT today, this scenario is more common these days than you might think. Not to diminish Loma Linda or anything like that, but those of us who have been treated at other facilities can attest; PBT isn't all that physician dependent.
In my own case, I remember the technician would check a series of calculations and then a physicist would check and finally the physician would make the same check. It was only after those checks matched that the beam was called for.
Knowing what I know from my own experience, I would encourage a man to check out the other centers instead of waiting Loma Linda center out.
And don't forget. There is a center in Seoul, South Korea that is available to you as well. Check out my early January posts for information about them. I will be writing more about them next week and will continue to focus on them.
Have a good weekend.
Blessings,
Rick

Prostate cancer is one of mens worst enemies, but with a checkup every 6 months alot can be diverted from having treatment altogether.
I would advise comparing the standard external beam radiation to proton. My radiotherapist collegues tell me there is little difference between the two. Particularly if you have to wait or pay more. Think in terms of the trifecta; cure, potency, continence. Is there a differnce in the two? john mchugh md urologist
