Today is my 5th year anniversary of being diagnosed with prostate cancer. I still remember the feelings I had when the doctor said "you have prostate cancer". It actually hit my wife harder than me and I appreciated the doctor going over to her to settle her down.
Since that time, my life has been a whirlwind of activity. I determined that I was going to spend my life educating, supporting and helping men and their families to get the help that they need.
I have realized during these last five years that there is a real disconnect between the medical community and proton beam therapy. They are threatened by it and feel the need to discourage people from it. That's sad in that a doctor should be encouraging a patient to choose the treatment best for them; which could be protons.
I've even heard a doctor mislead a whole group of men with prostate cancer about PBT because he's not trained to offer it. I actually wrote a letter to him listing my concern with his comments. I can only guess the number of pieces that the letter was torn into before he threw it away. I'm not expecting a phone call from him.
Have a good Thursday.
Blessings,
Rick
