I traveled 4 hours yesterday to the proton center where I was treated five years ago for prostate cancer to visit and encourage men who are being treated there now whom I had gotten acquainted with after they visited my blog and contacted me about my experience.
I had a great time meeting them for the first time. I also met many other people there who were at different stages of treatment.
I met a man who had become acquainted with guys who had something more than cancer in common. They all shared a passion for model airplane flying. We couldn't visit long because he was meeting his buddies for some serious flying.
I also met a man who had gone through surgery to remove his prostate, only to have the cancer return. Then onto photon radiation, only to learn that the doctor was treating more than necessary and he was burning the bladder (not good). Then onto MPRI (Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute) and now being cured with protons. He looked like he was having a great time there in the dining room where we were all visiting within Jill's House.
There were two guys there who fish every morning. In fact if I was going to visit today, I would be attending the fish fry they were hosting for everyone at Jill's House. One guy had just hosted a Jambalaya lunch at the center.
I met a Viet Nam vet who had developed prostate cancer as a result of being sprayed with Agent Orange. He was a post op patient also, but he was there for the cure. He works out at the gym everyday and looked like the picture of health. A great character. He said that he thought I was doing the Lord's work. That was my intention.
I met a mother who had just arrived the day before with her young son who has a brain tumor and they are there for the cure. She said they gave him a 100% cure diagnosis. I could see the concern in her eyes.
I met a man with a tumor near his optic nerve. His prognosis is good.
As I sat there in the dining room, one thing I didn't see were people looking like they had cancer. If you had been with me and didn't know where we were, you'd have thought we were in a hotel lobby visiting with people who were having a great time on vacation. In fact, that's what Proton Beam Therapy is called; a Radiation Vacation.
You see, there is treatment out there for different types of cancer that doesn't zap your strength and make you look like you have cancer. It's called Proton Beam and I'd love to share more with you.
I'm sure I'll write more later.
Have a good Thursday.
Blessings,
Rick
